Yet, because Clint Eastwood has so many memorable films, The Eiger Sanction is often forgotten. However, this film is not without its fair share of Hollywood history.

The Eiger Sanction is based on a book by the same name written by Trevanian.

The story follows Dr. Jonathan Hemlock, a college professor and mountain climber. However, he moonlights as a government assassin. He is hired for one last job: killing a man on the Eiger mountain in Switzerland.

Trevanian wrote The Eiger Sanction as a type of spoof on spy novels like James Bond.

Though, once Universal Studios bought the rights, they saw it as a big-time blockbuster. To act in the film, they chose superstar Clint Eastwood. Eastwood agreed, but he also insisted on producing and directing.

Wanting to make the film as realistic as possible, Eastwood decided to shoot the film on location in Switzerland. To do so, he hired top-rate climbers to assist.

Unfortunately, one of the sequences ended in tragedy. While filming, a boulder broke loose and killed climber David Knowles.

Although grief-struck, the crew decided to finish the film to honor Knowles.

While the crew managed some amazing action and mountain sequences, the film didn’t perform very well at the box office. The Eiger Sanction also had mediocre reviews. Compared to some of Eastwood’s other movies, The Eiger Sanction doesn’t hold up.

However, the film does have some legacy. Professional mountain climber Alex Honnold claimed The Eiger Sanction has the most realistic mountain climbing scenes of any Hollywood movie.

It seems like The Eiger Sanction was a product of its decade. It had everything a 70s over-the-top action film could ever want.

It might not be Clint Eastwood’s most famous movie, but it does have enough Hollywood history and tragedy to make it worth remembering.
