Back in the day when shampoos were not popular, most people would use soap for everything from head to toe. But since then, there’s been a lot of progress to a point where we’ve become overwhelmed with shampoo options. Fortunately, there are many shampoo categories that we can group them into. Each of these category will cater for a specify crowd of customers. So the question is: are you using the right shampoo for your hair type? Shampoos as per hair type with recommendations: Fine hair: Volumizing shampoo is best suited for lifeless thin hair to give an illusion of volume. As the name suggests, the shampoo is designed to add body and volume to hair. These shampoos usually do not deposit much conditioning quats, oils, or silicones on the hair. Instead, they clean the hair fairly well, and often contain ‘special’ ingredients that can deposit on hair to add friction at the roots and build volume. Recommendation: Xgain by cipla, Tresemme Volumizing shampoo, Biotique Volumizing shampoo Dry Lifeless hair Should choose a sulphate free moisturizing shampoo. These shampoos are mild on cleansing and help moisturize the hair strands to reduce the fizziness. Their goal is to cleanse gently and deposit protective layers to the hair. The detergents remove the environmental dirt and sebum from the hair in the water soluble phase, but the oils, silicones and other conditioning agents stay behind as a thin coating over the hair shaft. Nowadays most of them are sulfate free, but some may contain sodium laureth sulfate which is milder than sodium lauryl sulfate. Recommendations: Bodyshop Rainforest moisture shampoo, Triclenz shampoo Oily scalp Dry hair: The clarifying shampoo also referred to as the deep cleaning shampoo contains heavy duty surfactants. The goal is to remove any build-ups caused by using too much substantive products over a long time: heavy conditioners, hair sprays, silicone products, gels etc. This is an occasional shampoo and most of them use the sulfate surfactants for that purpose. Consistent usage can strip the hair of its oils and such, and cause problems. If your hair is dry and only scalp is oily, you can accompany this clarifying shampoo with a deep conditioner too. Recommendation: Loreal Extraordinary clay shampoo, park avenue beer shampoo Sweaty oily hair The everyday shampoo is the opposite of the clarifying shampoo. Many people face the need to shampoo every day, either because their tolerance for sebum is low or by force of habit. Showering without shampooing doesn’t feel hygienic. For those people a mild shampoo is required. The everyday shampoo doesn’t strip and cleans just enough. Recommendation: Mildy shampoo by Intas pharmaceuticals, Spoo shampoo by Curatio Dry Shampoo is an excellent option for an oily scalp, in which you do not need to shower everyday and still can manage a clean non oily scalp everyday. Recommendation: Avene dry shampoo, Dove dry shampoo Curly Hair Curly hair shampoos are always silicon and sulphate free to reduce the frizz and give the hair some bounce. Co-washes also suit curly hair well. Cowashes are a combination of shampoos and conditioners Recommendations: Only curls shampoo, curly Ellie shampoo Itchy scalp An itchy scalp needs a neutralizing shampoo with pH balancing properties to reduce the sensitivity. It should be sulphate free and help as a gentle cleanser Recommendation: Elution shampoo by Ducray Finally; Once you’ve identified what your hair needs, you can make the appropriate choice in terms of shampoo type. This will minimize the chances of disappointment with your newly purchased product and your hair will surely thank you for using the right shampoo fit.
