Smooth color blending is fun but the world around you is full of texture. You can read all the tutorials, take all the dimensional coloring classes but if you're smoothing everything into a perfect color blend, you're smoothing away the realism that comes from authentic texture.
Plus, everyone blends. You'll never find your own artistic style if you always color the same way as everyone else!
Authentic texture, it's an important key to realism.
