Persian Poem: No.38 Hafez Shirazi
Without the sun of your face, my day is bereft of light,
And of life, only darkest night is left me.
Patience is the cure for me for separation from you, but
How can patience be born when no strength is left?
At the tinme of farewell to you, from the excess of the weeping
that I made
Far from your cheek, in my eye no light was left.
Departed your image from my eye, and the eye was crying:
"Alas for this corner left untilled!"
Being united with you used to keep the angel of death far from
me. Now, because of the dominion of separation from you, far
he is no longer.
That moment has approached when your rival might say,
"Far from your door, that wounded rejected one is no more".
After this, what might it profit if the friend takes the trouble of
a step,
When of life in a stricken body not a last breath is left?
In separation from you, if there were not a waterdrop left in my
eyes,
Say: "Shed the blood of the liver because
excusing's left."
Háfiz through grief from weeping did not engage in laughter:
The mournful has no petitioning of the festive board left.

بی مهرِ رُخَت روزِ مرا نور نماندست
وز عمر، مرا جز شبِ دیجور نماندست
هنگامِ وداعِ تو ز بس گریه که کردم
دور از رخِ تو چشمِ مرا نور نماندست
می‌رفت خیالِ تو ز چشمِ من و می‌گفت
هیهات از این گوشه که معمور نماندست
وصلِ تو اجل را ز سرم دور همی‌داشت
از دولتِ هجرِ تو کنون دور نماندست
نزدیک شد آن دم که رقیب تو بگوید
دور از رُخَت این خستهٔ رنجور نماندست
صبر است مرا چارهٔ هجرانِ تو لیکن
چون صبر توان کرد؟ که مقدور نماندست
در هجرِ تو گر چشمِ مرا آبِ روان است
گو خونِ جگر ریز که معذور نماندست
حافظ، ز غم از گریه نپرداخت به خنده
ماتم زده را داعیهٔ سور نماندست
