I wasn’t expecting a decent
I wasn’t expecting a decent sports game as the first 3D ones were always so bad but it just took a couple of years to start making decent sims. This is an easy game to get into due to the plethora of options. I chose the arcade mode rather than sim which removes all the rules which make the game a slog. Having the fouls turned off meant that I could steal the ball constantly. It is a bit of a cheat since I can get the ball so much easier, but it does negate the biggest problem I have in basketball games in general, which is not being able to or very rarely being able to steal. This cuts out the boring gameplay of myself scoring then them scoring, repeat until the end of the game.
It did make the game incredibly easy as in I scored 99 points in the final, but its more satisfying to have the ball than waiting for the computer to do whatever it wants because you can’t steal.
The graphics are functional too. Not like NBA Jam where you can’t tell where the ball is. The camera angle choice is good too and I liked quite a few of them.
There is also a 3-point challenge mode that is OK but it took one go to figure out the controls (because they are different to in-game) and then on my second go I had mastered it and only missed one shot out of 25.
The buttons are a bit messed up as when I won my first game, I pressed A to continue, like you would in any other game, but in this game, A means you simulate the next match rather than playing it and it simulated a loss for me and then simulated the entire cup. Meaning I had to start again. It’s very easy to make this mistake. B is the select button on this game which goes against every other Saturn game as the select button is always either A or C or both, but never B.
The game also forces you to make a really big save file before you can even enter the game which is really cheeky as you are forced to delete other games to make space, even if you just want to play 1 exhibition match.
I was impressed by the game though. It’s a decent sports sim.
