Police Minister Bheki Cele says the next few days are crucial in determining whether the nationwide lockdown will be extended beyond the 21-day period.
Cele is in Secunda in Mpumalanga to assess if residents are adhering to the national lockdown rules.
Addressing law enforcers, Cele says police officers must encourage residents to stay at home or in his words, "push them back into their homes".
But he says police must act in accordance with the law at all times.
