Automatic headlights are a convenient
Automatic headlights are a convenient item that many people forget is even a feature (unless it stops working). Instead of relying on the driver to turn on headlights, an on-board computer decides when headlights should be turned on.
A daylight sensor, usually located at the top of the center of the dashboard, allows the ECU (or other computer acronym) to know how bright it is outside, and decide what should be done. Not only does this sensor get used for headlights, but the computer can also use the information to control variable dashboard brightness and/or the backlight on driver assistance and dashboard screens.

Turning the headlights on used to be very direct, but now, even selecting "on", not "auto", gets the control computer involved, which fundamentally changes how headlights work, electrically.
