Automatic headlights are a convenient item that many people forget is even a feature (unless it stops working). Instead of relying on the driver to turn on headlights, an on-board computer decides when headlights should be turned on.

A daylight sensor, usually located at the top of the center of the dashboard, allows the ECU (or other computer acronym) to know how bright it is outside, and decide what should be done. Not only does this sensor get used for headlights, but the computer can also use the information to control variable dashboard brightness and/or the backlight on driver assistance and dashboard screens.

0:00 • Introdutction to Headlight Controls
Turning the headlights on used to be very direct, but now, even selecting "on", not "auto", gets the control computer involved, which fundamentally changes how headlights work, electrically. Auto headlamps in cars are not as advanced as automatic high beams, but we will discuss them in another video.

1:18 • Adding Automatic Headlights
Automatic headlights require ways of detecting the appropriate time to turn lights on and off. There are two types of sensors that can be used to detect light, and while only one is typically used in a vehicle, both can be found in vehicles in general.

3:13 • Recap: Explaining The Electronics Again
With some basic circuitry, an automotive computer can use a sunlight sensor to determine when to turn headlights on or off. This allows the driver to focus on the road and worry less about having the proper amount of lighting at the right time.

4:10 • Additional ECU Headlight Control Logic
The sunlight sensor doesn't have the final say! The computer has other things to consider, and will consider other variables instead of being simply a part that converts the input from a single sensor into the output needed for the headlight to activate or deactivate.

4:37 • Sensor Sensitivity: How Soon Headlights Turn On/Off
Many drivers feel like the automatic headlights in their vehicle turn on/off too soon or not soon enough. What can be done to change the sensitivity of the automatic headlights?

5:37 • What Happens When a Sunlight Sensor Fails?
If the computer can't get information from the daylight sensor, or the sensor is wrong, what happens?
