Sound engineers assemble and operate equipment used to create great audio for a production.

They have several roles and responsibilities including:

Recording speech, music, and other sounds
Working with producers, performers, and other team members to achieve the desired sound in a production
Separating and combining different vocals, music, and instruments during mixing and postproduction
Regulating volume levels of different audio sources
Setting up, testing, and adjusting recording equipment for recording sessions and live performances
Keeping logs of those performances
Investigating equipment problems and checking on repairs
Converting video and audio recordings into digital formats

In 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded $35,090 as the average base salary. By 2019, the average base salary rose to $67,090. Wages grew by $32,000 (or $1,600 yearly) from 1999-2019. The estimated 2021 average base salary would be $70,290, using $1,600 as the average yearly income. If trends were to continue, by 2029, the average base salary would rise to $83,090.

The job market for sound engineers has risen since 1999. In 1999, there were 9,380 employed sound engineers. In 2008, the number of sound engineers hit a peak of 16,600 employed. Since 2011, the number of employed sound engineers has fallen. From 1999 - 2019, there was a total gain of 3,510 (176 per year) employed sound engineers. But there are almost 4,000 fewer employed sound engineers than in 2008. In 2019, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted a 6% increase in employed sound engineers. By 2029, they are predicting 14,050 employed sound engineers.
