WASHINGTON — After a number of near misses in space, the U.S. Space Force wants to create an Earth-orbiting garbage-collection service for hire. Here are the details:

With governments and private organizations launching exponentially more objects into space than ever before, the hottest topic right now is how to get rid of all the dangerous junk that is starting to clog Earth orbit.

The U.S. Space Force recently announced its newest project, called Orbital Prime, which will work with private companies to produce technology to recycle, reuse or remove the millions of pieces of space debris that are flying around Earth at very high speeds.

The move comes a few months after Russia used a missile to destroy one of its old satellites, causing a huge cloud of space debris to spread out into Earth orbit.

China did the same thing in 2007, but last December China asked for rules to regulate such actions after its space station had to maneuver to get out of the way of some of SpaceX’s small Starlink satellites.

More recently, China also had to maneuver one of its satellites to get out of the way of the debris cloud created by the Russian missile test.

In 2009, an obsolete Russian spacecraft hit an American Iridium satellite, creating more than 2,300 new pieces of space junk.

The US Space Surveillance Network tracks more than 23,000 artificial objects larger than a baseball orbiting the earth, plus around half a million pieces of debris the size of a marble or larger, and an estimated 100 million pieces larger than 1 millimeter.
