Virgin Mary Church Diyarbakir
St. Mary's Cathedral is among the most important religious buildings of Diyarbakır, dazzling with its historical texture. Not only is it a church, but it is also an important piece of heritage that sheds light on the rich cultural and religious past of the region.
The historical Assyrian Church, located in the Lale Bey District of Diyarbakır, was built in the I.S. It was converted into a church in 280, but its exact date is uncertain. The building is a complex building group that has been repaired, renovated and expanded with additions in various periods. Inside the church, there is the Church of Virgin Mary, the Mor Yakup sanctuary, four courtyards, classrooms and lodgings. 14 inscriptions indicate the repairs and additions to the buildings. The church took its current form with a restoration carried out in 2004-2005, and in 2005, with the contributions of Assyrians from Diyarbakır, it gained an appearance that fully reflects its historical identity. The church, which draws attention with its architectural features from the late Roman period, consists of four courtyards, a courtyard and sections where the clergy live. It is known for its woodwork, columns, pulpits and icons.
In addition to Mor Yakup, the bones of the famous cleric Mar Toma and Bishop Bar Salibi of Diyarbakır, who died in India, are buried here. Hz.
