To determine the number of ions in NaCl you need to recognize the we have an ionic compound. This is because Na is a metal and Cl is a non-metal and there is a large difference in the electronegativity values for Na and Cl. For Sodium chloride (NaCl) there is one Sodium ion, Na+ and there is one Chloride ion, Cl-. So there are a total of two ions for one formula unit of NaCl. Helpful Resources: Finding Charge on Ions:    • Figuring out the Charge on Ions   Types of Compounds:    • How to Identify Different Types of Ch...   If you were given one mole of NaCl you would have 1 mole of Na+ ions and 1 mole of Cl- ions. Likewise if you were given something like, 0.43 mole of NaCl you would have 1 x 0.43 mol of Na+ ions and 1 x 0.43 mol of Cl- ions. If you were given grams and asked to find the number of ions in a certain amount of Grams of NaCl you could need to convert the grams to moles first.
