It’s been a year and a half since the borders between Malaysia and Singapore were shut. As Malaysians stranded in Singapore make long-term plans amid reopening uncertainties, hotel and resort operators in Malaysia's southernmost state of Johor are taking this period to retool their business models as they strive to keep afloat while waiting for the return of foreign visitors including those from neighbouring Singapore.

As Malaysia’s local economy continues to suffer under the weight of lockdown measures and border closures, many local residents are struggling to make ends meet, prompting organisations across society to come together to help vulnerable communities to tide through the current crisis.
