Are BBQ Grill Brushes Dangerous?

Grill brushes have been in the news a lot lately. The bristles can come loose and end up in your food, then in your mouth.  They can be hard to get out and require surgery to remove.  That doesn't sound like fun, but I was curious how often it happened and investigated the frequency.
