32-year-old runner Gabriele Grunewald is not letting a battle with cancer get in the way of her Olympic dreams.

This runner is fighting cancer while training for the 2020 Olympics. 32-year-old Gabriele Grunewald is a national championship professional runner who has been a cancer survivor for almost a decade. Grunewald was first diagnosed when she was a senior in college and running on the track team at the University of Minnesota. Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and unique cancer that most commonly arises in the salivary glands of the head and neck and spreads to other tissues and organs in the body. 89% of people with ACC have a 5-year survival rate and is known to recur after treatment. While undergoing all the different treatments. Grunewald has competed at the Olympic trials twice, once in 2012 and again in 2016. While Grunewald has continued running, she says her motivation for doing so has changed. Grunewald has managed to find a way to keep running. Grunewald works with organizations that help fund research for rare cancers. In 2018 Grunewald formed her own organization called the Brave Like Gabe Foundation, an organization that supports rare cancer research and empowers cancer survivors through physical activity.
