Floating plants consume excess nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates from the water, helping to prevent unwanted algae blooms. Their photosynthesis, like all plants, produces oxygen in return. Thanks to their emersed leaves poking above the surface, they can absorb carbon from the atmosphere, so a CO2 injection system is not needed for this type of plant. This makes floating plants an easy, undemanding plants for our aquariums. Floaters are also extremely useful for breeding of both shrimp and fish. The plant's underwater roots catch little things floating in the water column and provide excellent hiding spots for the vulnerable fry. Both your fish and shrimp babies, as well as other microorganisms, will find shelter in these plants and they provide spawning grounds for our adult livestock. Floating plants do cause shading in the aquarium and can reduce surface flow. This does help livestock that like the tank a bit darker and quieter, as it helps them to feel comfortable in the underwater world. They are amazing for use with labyrinth fish, like the Betta, or animals that don't like excess flow, like our shrimp. The reduction in surface flow can eventually prevent oxygenation of the water and produce negative results, so it is recommended to remove some floating plants during every water change to prevent this. A portion of the floating plants is removed instead of cutting anything like you would with stem plants. If necessary, roots that have got too long can be clipped using a pair of scissors, this is necessary on plants such as frogbit and water lettuce.. Even though most floating plants are pretty undemanding, there still are some things to be kept in mind. Most species are quite fast-growing and consume many nutrients from the water column of the aquarium. Especially in fish and shrimp breeding, these plants are used just for this reason, as their growth eats up quite a lot of phosphates and nitrates. If floating plants lack nutrients, they show this through corresponding deficiency symptoms, such as yellowing leaves, black striping or stagnant growth.
