Dire wolves, once considered close relatives of gray wolves, have been discovered to have a different evolutionary path.

The dire wolves lived in North America from about 250,000 to 13,000 years ago and were about 20% larger than today's wolves.

They hunted in packs, taking down large prey such as bison, horses, and small mammoths.

Researchers extracted genetic samples from dire wolf remains and discovered that dire wolves have their own lineage, separate from those that gave rise to African jackals, gray wolves, coyotes, and dogs by nearly 6 million years.

Genetic analysis indicates that dire wolves probably evolved in the Americas and were unable to breed with gray wolves and coyotes, which likely arrived from Eurasia about 20,000 years ago.

The reason for the extinction of dire wolves is still uncertain, but it is suspected that human hunting of the dire wolves' prey contributed to their demise.
