POV start up and test
POV start up and test drive of a 2024 Honda Ridgeline TrailSport with a 3.5-liter SOHC V-6 featuring Honda's legendary VTEC variable valve timing system. The V-6 produces 280 horsepower, and is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is rated at a healthy 20 mpg combined.
My driving impressions are as follows: The entire powertrain setup on the Ridgeline is amazing. The V-6 is quiet yet gives off a satisfying growl as RPMs pass 3k, and the quintessential “VTEC kicks in” effect occurs. You know the engine is there, but not because you feel anything other than it pulling the truck to speed at a smooth and linear pace. Transmission shifts were nearly unnoticeable at any shift point or throttle input. This stood out to me the most. Honda has made the traditionally brash and unrefined truck experience and made it the opposite. And that is OKAY. It's great actually.
It is one of the smoothest driving experiences I have had the pleasure of having in a mainstream model. The unibody chassis gives the Ridgline car-like driving dynamics — direct and planted, with just about as much pickup truck capability most anybody really needs. And in the TrailSport, even with its beefier all-terrain tires, little changed to offset any other potential drawback in performance or tech. Seats were comfortable and materials are satisfactory for the segment and price.
I was thoroughly impressed overall. And now I want to take one off pavement.
