If you paint in a
If you paint in a loose or intuitive way, it’s inevitable that some paintings will go through an “ugly phase” when it’s very tempting to throw down your brush and call it a failure. But I’ve found that at that moment, when the painting is at its ugliest, you are freed from your plans and expectations - and if you persist, something new and wonderful might happen. (Or it might not, in which case you’ve probably learnt something but the only thing that’s been lost is a piece of paper!)
