Hong Kong is built on the caldera of an unbelievably massive super volcano that existed between 180 to 140 million years ago. 5 different large calderas are dotted around Hong Kong, and it itself is literally built upon the bowels of the once churning magma chamber, which in present day exists as granite outcrops in the more deeply eroded parts, and rhyolite outcrops in others.

The High Island Volcanic caldera was the final and largest supervolcanic eruption that occurred here, with it being stronger then Yellowstone's most recent supervolcanic eruption. It released over 1300 km3 of material and was a VEI 8 on the volcanic explosivity index. The volcano existed as a result of a subduction zone that lay of the east side of ancient china, where the pacific ocean was subducting beneath the plate, and the associated melt led to the formation of this massive supervolcanic complex. This region is extremely complex, there are numerous large faults and many more smaller faults. There are many areas where numerous basaltic dykes spewed out effusive lava flows, and there seems to be some evidence of this volcanic eruption beginning life as an intermediate composition with some andesitic rocks being found, too.

Hong Kong has some of the most spectacular outcrops of the incredibly rare columnar rhyolite formations. These beautiful light coloured hexagonal pillars dotted all around the area are the solidified remains of the massive amounts of magma that existed in the batholithic magma chamber that present day Hong Kong is literally built within.
