I am often asked the question: "What breed of owl would you recommend to start as a newbie?" I mentally slap my hand in the face and recommend you to get nothing.

Well guys, seriously! You want to get an animal that is extremely difficult to maintain and nurture, but you cannot even correctly formulate what you want. Due to your lack of knowledge, I immediately understood that you did not even try to search for information, but dumped questions on to others expecting people to answer all your questions at once, moreover, with politeness and helpfulness. And then you are offended that people send you to read at least something.

Wild animals have NO breeds. They have species.

A breed is a collection of domestic animals of the same species, artificially created by humans and characterized by: certain hereditary characteristics,  hereditarily fixed productivity and appearance. (The keyword is "artificial"!!!). A breed is the result of breeding related to domesticated animals.

Therefore, do not get an owl. Please read basic information before asking trivial questions. Believe me, if you do so, I will be much happier and more willing to answer you.

Note: This confusion stems from how animals are named in Russian. In English, all owl species are named "something-owl" so English speakers don't get confused, but in Russian each owl species has a unique name. For example, eagle-owl is called "filin", and scops owl is "splyushka".
