This video is about how I make a wood kitchen scoop from a piece of honey locust that has been up-cycled from a tree that went down in a windstorm. I start this project by mounting the wood blank between centers on the wood lathe. Using a spindle roughing gouge I remove the bark and bring it down to round. A dovetail tenon is cut on the end to mount it into a four jaw woodturning chuck. Bring up the live center to make sure you stay on center before you tighten the chuck. It's best to think of this project as a series of steps. The first step is to shape the outside of the scoop portion. Before you move on to the handle and remove that supporting wood it's time to hollow the scoop. After the wall thickness is the same all the way down the outside and inside of the scoop are sanded. Now it's time to shape that handle. Work your way down starting near the scoop and work your way down until you achieve the desired handle shape. I wire burn in some lines for decoration and then get ready to part it off with a saw. The top of the scoop is removed on a bandsaw. It helps to have a belt sander to clean up the curved edges. The scoop is finished up with mineral oil and is now ready to use!
