Anti-Chechen sentiment is swelling in the neighbouring republic of Dagestan, after constant attacks from Chechen Islamic extremists.

Three hundred women in the village of Dylym, in the Kazbeksky region, have formed a volunteer batallion to fight the Chechen rebels alongside their men.

It's a battle not just for survival, but religion and ideology; a fundamental belief in Islam which, according to women in the village of Dylym, their Chechen neighbours have violated.

Konanak Magometova, a school teacher, says she had never thought of taking up arms.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Islam is the most sacred thing for me. I'm a pure Islamist myself. But they (the Chechens) have betrayed the Islam. They betrayed their women, their children, brothers and sisters."

But now asked if she would kill, Magomedova said she would have no doubts.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"There's no sin. They (the Chechens) are not human beings."

Such hatred is all-pervasive, in a village constantly under threat from rebel incursions into Dagestan.

And while the Russian army carries out reprisals around Grozny, the Chechen capital, these proud villagers find strength in the belief they can defend themselves.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"We are fighting for our freedom and honour. It's not Kizlyar, nor Budyonnovsk, they (Chechens) will get here what they deserve".
SUPER CAPTION: Liya, Dylym villager

Liya is the most talented female sniper.

Her skills will be needed, if information the villagers have received proves correct.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"We received the information the Chechens are planning to invade our villages of Leninaul and Kalinaul. A 600-men strong Arabic batallion is stationed 5 kms away from here".
SUPER CAPTION: Dagestani Field Commander

In the village of Dylym, every able-bodied person counts.
