The northernmost reach of the
The northernmost reach of the Rift Valley, "The Hula" is one of my favorite places to bird. Scenes from this day trip in early February include Common Cranes in flight, Common Kingfisher diving, Little Egret, Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stilt, European Kestrel, Black-winged Kite, Marsh Harrier, Great Spotted Eagle, Spur-winged Plover, Crested Lark, White-throated Kingfisher, Common Shelduck, European Coot. The Black-winged Kite (Elanus Caeruleus) is a very rare breeder in the Western Palearctic, with most records from central Spain and Portugal. The recently discovered nesting pair in the Hula Valley is an exceptional treat. The bird shown in this video successfully reared four young in 2012. The footage of the Kite was taken at a distance of about 80 meters, Snow-capped Mt Hermon to the north straddles the borders between Israel, Syria, and Lebanon.
