An all-wheel drive station wagon with extra ground clearance is nothing new, but Volkswagen puts a new spin on this tested formula with its 2017 Golf Alltrack. Equipped with VW’s 4Motion system and an Off-Road driving mode, the Alltrack looks tougher and more capable than a regular Golf, but it’s not intended for true off-roading and has less ground clearance than a Subaru Outback. Its 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque.
Chris Wardlaw loved the Golf Alltrack’s driver’s seat because it’s exceptionally comfortable. Space in the 40/20/40-split backseat isn’t generous, but each section can be dropped individually, and with those seats dropped, the Alltrack can stow 66.5 cubic feet of cargo. Wardlaw was pleased to be able to get a standard transmission, but found the navigation system in the available Discover Media infotainment system unimpressive. Happily, the system supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Read more on CarGurus: https://cargur.us/j02B5
