The greatness of Lord Padmanabha
#Lord Padmanabha, who is bound neither by time or space, resides as Ananthasayi at Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
History and myth converge at this temple where the supreme lord lies in his yogic sleep while the entire pantheon of Gods wait on him.
The idol of Lord Padmanabha, the real emperor of Travancore, is visible through three doors. He reclines on the great serpent Adishesha who coils himself up to form a three layered bed for his lord. The three layers represent the three inherent qualities, sathva, rajo and thamogunas. Adishesha appears as a five headed serpent whose head represent the five senses. These symbols depict the omnipresence of Lord Narayana, the one who sleeps in the cosmic ocean.
The idol which is made of kadumsarkarayogam(a mixture of medicinal substances) is filled 12000 saalagraams. Saalagraams are rocks found in the Gandaki river at Nepal. Gandaki carries Narayana in her womb and hence these rocks bear the essence of the God of Gods.
The right hand of the reclining Lord extends to caress a sivalinga made of saivasaalagram. Some believe that the supreme lord is worshipping Lord Shiva, while some say that Lord Vishnu is protecting Lord Shiva from the great apocalypse. A lotus blooms from the naval of Padmanabha and Lord Brahma, the creator, resides on the thousand petalled flower. An idol of chathurbahu(four handed)  Narayana exists near Ananthasayi. Offerings are made before the standing smaller idol since they cannot be made before the principal deity. The entire pantheon of Gods, led by the great sage Narada assembles at the alcove, worshipping Lord Vishnu.
The sanctum houses not only Lord Narayana but also the goddesses Lakshmi and Bhoomi (goddess of the earth). Sages Bhrigu and Markandeya are also present ,which adds to the spirituality of the sanctum.  Sage Bhrigu's footprint adorns the bosom of Lord Padmanabha as Sreevalsam. Bhrigu is worshipped as the father figure of Lakshmi Devi while the immortal sage Markandeya is considered as the father of Goddess Bhoomi.
Most of the vaishnava temples give much importance to conches while coconut shell is used to submit offerings before Lord Hrishikesha. The shell was used to offer salted mangoes to the Lord when he appeared before the devotees for the first time. This eons old coconut shell is plated in gold to prevent its deterioration.
A devotee arriving at Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple to worship the Lord will be worshipping the complete pantheon of Gods since Narayana is present in all and all are present in him. He served as the instrument of creation, preserves the universe and its balance and finally brings forth the apocalypse. At the microcosmic level he brings forth creation of the self, preserves the essence of existence and at the end destroys the fictitious self and brings forth liberation(nirvana) . The Lord is worshipped as the Buddha, or the one who is the source of enlightenment.
