Unfortunately, you’re probably eating the wrong kind of this “health” food. It’s important to avoid these 3 mistakes when buying Greek yogurt.

So first off, I have to say that I don’t eat Greek yogurt anymore. I stopped eating greek yogurt over 2 years ago, since my body just doesn’t handle dairy very well. However, if you can digest dairy, I’m sure you’ve heard of, and probably tried, Greek yogurt. It’s been super marketed as a healthy and high protein alternative to regular yogurt.

Is Greek Yogurt Healthy?
What if I told you not all brands of Greek yogurt are created the same? Like most things in the food industry, food marketers will take something pure, and re-create it to suit the tastebuds of today’s sugar obsessed culture.

This means different brands of Greek yogurt will have different:
- Calorie amounts
- Protein amounts
- Sugar amounts
- Ingredients list
- Processing techniques

Avoid These 3 Mistakes When Buying Greek Yogurt:
Next time you pick up a jug of Greek yogurt, pay attention to these 3 things.

#1. The Amount of Protein Per Serving
In most cases, Greek yogurt should contain twice as much protein per serving as conventional yogurt. However, depending on the straining process the company uses, the amount of protein per serving will vary.

Always read the nutrition label when comparing brands of Greek yogurt. I’ve seen some brands of Greek yogurt containing twice as much protein as other brands.

This is because some food marketers skip the straining process, and just add thickening agents and low quality whey protein concentrates, to increase the protein amount.

#2. Make Sure You’re Actually Buying Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is made by straining the liquid whey from the regular yogurt. This straining process makes Greek yogurt more solid and also removes some of the sugar and increases the protein content.

The ingredients list on Greek yogurt should include:
- Milk
- Live active cultures

However, be aware. If the label says “Greek” it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s Greek yogurt. Like I said earlier, some brands just add thickening agents and protein to the yogurt, to make it look like Greek yogurt. The good thing is you’ll see these added ingredients on the ingredients list, so you’ll know better.

#3. Stick With Unflavored Greek Yogurt And Add Your Own Healthy Flavors
Unflavored Greek yogurt doesn’t taste sweet. This is why companies are adding up to 25 grams of sugar via:
- Fruit sugar concentrates
- Evaporated cane juice
- Fake sugars i.e. artificial sweeteners

Instead of buying already sweetened versions of Greek yogurt, buy unflavored and add your own healthy natural sweeteners such as:
- Stevia
- Fruit
- Honey
- Maple syrup

Here’s an example of a healthy yogurt recipe, where we added delicious and flavorful ingredients to plain yogurt. Take back control of what you’re putting in your body.

Bonus Tip: Frozen Greek Yogurt Isn’t Greek Yogurt
Even though the calories may be similar, the overall macronutrient balance is not. Frozen Greek yogurt is typically lower in protein and higher in sugar.

As with any food decision, it’s buyer beware.
