0:00 One question I’m often asked is what is deductible in a Swiss tax return. In the next couple of minutes I will give you a list of three items that expats can deduct in their Swiss tax return.
0:15 Hi, I’m Beat Meyer, with Expat Tax Switzerland. I’m a Swiss certified public accountant and tax specialist and I help expats in Switzerland with their tax returns at affordable rates.
0:29 Although the tax system in Switzerland can be complex, there are several items that can be deducted in the tax return. The amounts may vary from canton to canton, but the deductions are generally the same. These expat deductions are based on a federal regulation and also on cantonal regulations.
0:50 You can only profit from these deductions if you qualify as an expat in the meaning of these regulations. This is typically for people moving to Switzerland on a temporary assignment and keeping ties to their home country. For example, the cost of moving to Switzerland and back to the home country, the cost of sending children to foreign language school, and also, a reasonable amount for accommodation in Switzerland if he can prove that he has kept the second home abroad.
1:26 This special treatment ends as soon as your temporary assignment is changed into a permanent contract or after staying in Switzerland for 5 years (whichever comes first).
