Ukraine held a military parade in the capital Kiev on Monday to mark its Independence Day.

Some 2,300 soldiers took part in the ceremony, which was presided over by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

"We were very happy to see the military parade. It’s good to see smiles on people’s faces and the warmth in their eyes in such a turbulent environment, we are just like a family," said Andre, a Kiev resident.

During the ceremony, Poroshenko stressed that although the war had caused significant damage, Ukraine's economy should see growth in the next few months.

Recently, the situation in Ukraine has once again become tense. According to official figures, 2,100 government soldiers have died in the conflicts.

After the ceremony, Poroshenko went to Berlin, Germany to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande to talk about the situation in eastern Ukraine.

Independence Day is the main state holiday in Ukraine, celebrated on August 24, commemorating the Declaration of Independence signed in 1991. As Ukraine celebrates its 24th year of independence, activities like galas and concerts are being held across the country.
