The letter to Pius IX from Don Bosco read:
Turin, June 27, 1867
Most Blessed Father,
Several circumstances prevent me from going to Rome to pay my respects to the Vicar of Jesus Christ on the occasion of the Centenary of Saint Peter, of whom Your Holiness is his Successor. However, as a Christian, as a Priest, and as a rector of charitable houses, I make it my gravest and most heartfelt duty to send two of my priests, Angelo Savio and Giovanni Cagliero, to prostrate themselves at the feet of Your Holiness along with the faithful gathered in Rome from so many parts of the world.
These two represent the priests, clerics, and 1,200 boys of our houses in Turin, Lanzo, and Mirabello, along with many good lay Catholics whose occupations or conditions do not permit them to go to Rome personally.
All these profess themselves to be the most affectionate sons of Your Holiness: Most attached to the Catholic religion and ready to give their goods, and their lives to live and die in that religion, of which Your Holiness is Supreme Head on earth.
I believe it will console Your Holiness that the newly consecrated bishops were received in their dioceses with the most excellent signs of esteem and reverence. Even happier times never saw such a general concourse of civil and ecclesiastical authorities, nor of all classes and conditions of citizens, transported with holy enthusiasm toward a new pastor who walked among them as in true triumph. These facts show how Catholic our countries are, provided they are free to practice their religion.
The enemy of souls now places obstacles to prevent further appointments of bishops in vacant sees. We pray that God will enlighten the blind and give health and strength to your Holiness so that you may lead this holy work to its longed-for completion…
If I may be allowed, on this singular and extraordinary solemnity, to ask Your Holiness an ardently desired favor: With the greatest respect, I respectfully renew my request that Your Holiness approves the Constitutions of the Congregation of Saint Francis de Sales, with whatever corrections, variations, and additions Your Holiness deems necessary for the greater glory of God and the welfare of souls.
In the meantime, we will continue in all our houses to pray morning and evening for Your Holiness, that God will grant You health and grace to sustain the grave storms—perhaps not far off—that God allows the enemies of goodness to raise against religion. This is the last trial, but the triumph will be Yours afterward. It is time for us all to unite in one heart and soul to pray to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary Most Holy Immaculate: The two anchors of health in the impending hurricane.
On behalf of all those mentioned above, I prostrate myself at the feet of Your Holiness to ask for the holy and apostolic Blessing. With the deepest gratitude and the greatest veneration, I always consider it the most beautiful moment of my life when I can profess myself.
