Formerly an architect, social activist, and U.S. Marine sniper, John Stewart was chosen by the Guardians of the Universe to join the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping organization dedicated to protecting life throughout the universe. Stewart has proven himself time and again to be an exceptional champion in countless missions that have taken him across the cosmos. His distinguished service in the Corps has resulted in a place among the Oan Honor Guard and the position of Corps Leader.

John Stewart, one of the characters known as Green Lantern, is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics and was the second African-American superhero to appear in DC Comics.[1] The character was created by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams, and first appeared in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #87 (December 1971/January 1972). Stewart's original design was based on actor Sidney Poitier.

The character is primarily voiced by Phil LaMarr in the DC Animated Universe (DCAU). David Ramsey portrays a character named John Diggle (né Stewart) / Spartan in the Arrowverse television series Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Batwoman and Superman & Lois, who is indicated to become a Green Lantern in the series finale of the former series. Wayne T. Carr was cast as John Stewart in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) director's cut Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021), although his scenes were cut from the initial release of the film.

John Stewart was created by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams, first appearing in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #87. However, in the Prime Earth continuity, John Stewart first appeared as part of the New 52 DC Universe in Green Lantern Corps (Volume 3) #1 by Peter Tomasi and Fernando Pasarin.

Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.

Introducing himself to Hal for the first time, John claims his friends call him, "Square" John, before joking about calling him "Black Lantern.
In an unusual move for a Green Lantern, John Stewart does not wear a domino mask to protect his true identity. He made this perfectly clear at the start of his training by Hal Jordan when he tossed the mask away and declared the questionable "This black man lets it all hang out! I've got nothing to hide!"
Stewart's constructs are amongst the most powerful. As noted by many, Stewart's constructs are never hollow. He builds them from the inside out, down to the last nut and bolt.
Stewart considers himself a liberal by inclination.
It is implied that John grew up in a Baptist family.
