Romanian is spoken by at least 24 million people, primarily in the European nations of Romania, where it is the nationally official language, and Moldova, where it is also called Moldovan. An Eastern Romance language, it is most closely related to the Aromanian (Macedo-Romanian), Megleno-Romanian, and Istro-Romanian languages, as well Castelmezzano, an under-resourced language from southern Italy.
