👀 Wait for it… Dr. Aaron Celestian shares a striking tenebrescent scapolite gem that recently graced the halls of #NHMLA:

“A tenebrescent scapolite gem came for a visit today! The blue color will last for a few minutes in room light, and the bright light brings back the colorless nature of the gem.

Tenebrescence is the total change of color after exposure to UV. You can see the gem fluorescence yellow at first, and then tenebresces blue for a long while afterwards.

It’s not totally certain when this happens in scapolite, and why the those from Afghanistan are more pronounced than others. A study in 2015 (Norrbo et al.) showed that electrons liberated from sulfur groups in the molecular cages of a crystal are trapped in anion vacancies in the crystal (causing absorption of all color except blue in this case). It takes bright light to liberates these electrons back to sulfur and return the crystal back to its colorless gem.”
