In this video, I take you through conditional formatting in Excel in ten steps from beginner to near-professional level. We start with simple cell formatting, explore advanced formatting options such as icon sets and colour bars, then cover more sophisticated techniques such as using a formula to determine which cell to format. You’ll be using conditional formatting in Excel, with confidence, in no time.
Along the way, I point out some of the pitfalls of conditional formatting – the all-important ‘don’ts’! Yes, conditional formatting is one of the main drivers of spreadsheet inefficiency and things can go wrong quickly. A file that feels ‘unusable’ for no apparent reason is often suffering from a deluge of duplicated conditional formatting rules …
So, how do you stay on top of the conditional formatting rules while creating the functions and visual effect you need? As we’ll see, the conditional formatting rules manager is key – and I introduce a completely different option at the end for when the conditional formatting simply won’t work.
