(10 Sep 2017) LEADIN:
Iraqi Shiites and visitors from around the Shia world have been celebrating Eid al-Ghadir, also known as the Event of Ghadir Khumm, an important religious date for followers of Shia Islam.
STORYLINE:
Celebrations for Eid al-Ghadir are taking place in Najaf, a major Shia city in Iraq and the location of Ali's shrine.
Many people have come from other parts of the Arab and Shia world, including Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Visitor from Kuwait Qassem Nasr says it is an important festival.
"We also congratulate all our Muslim brothers around the world and we ask the most merciful God to spread His peace and security and prosperity and tolerance so that we may have love among us. We must have a real brotherhood," he says.
Shia Muslims believe that on this day in 632 the Prophet Mohammed appointed Ali, his cousin and son-in-law, his successor.
Visitor from Saudi Arabia Mansour al-Madani says it is a happy time.
"It's a very joyful and impressive atmosphere. To be with so many people, among millions, who came here to renew their fealty to the imams and the 'Guardianship of the Jurist'. It is a great atmosphere with a lot of spirituality," he says.
The succession to the Prophet is one important point of contention between Sunni and Shia Islam.
The Eid al-Ghadir in 2017 takes place from the evening of 9 September until sundown, 10 September.
