Johnny Rotten quit the Sex
Johnny Rotten quit the Sex Pistols after the Winterland gig in San Francisco, the last show the band held during their tour of the United States. The final straw for the lead singer was hearing about a poetry reading Malcolm McLaren wanted to do with the British fugitive Ronnie Biggs who was said to be hiding out in Brazil. This bizarre publicity stunt along with the exhausting tour of America and the manager's shady shenanigans was too much for Rotten who quit the band.
Meanwhile the remaining Sex Pistols Paul Cook and Steve Jones flew off to Brazil to meet Ronnie Biggs while Malcolm during a brief detour in England to finalize a contract to make him their new lead singer and brought it with him along with the band's filmmaker Julien Temple and a cameraman. During their stay in Brazil, they shot footage and recorded two songs that would be featured in the film "The Great Rock n' Roll Swindle."
