Resting heart rate or RHR is the number of times your heart beats per minute while you’re at rest, while Max heart rate or MHR is the average maximum number of times your heart should beat per minute during exercise.

MHR and workout intensities.
When you exercise, your heartbeat increases to meet the demand for more blood and oxygen by the muscles that are engaged in the activity. The more intense the movement, the faster your heart will beat. Therefore, monitoring your heart rate during exercise can be a great way to monitor your exercise intensity.

RHR and health
Resting heart rate is an indicator of fitness and general health. The average resting heart rate for adults is between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), but this varies according to your activity levels and other factors like medication and stress. In this video running coach, Dan highlights the difference in RHR for sedentary people, half marathon/ marathon runners, and highly adapted endurance athletes.

Let’s dive deeper into the science of heart rate, how to calculate your MHR, and more with this video.
