The surprise German Ardennes offensive
The surprise German Ardennes offensive in the snows of December 1944 was Hitler’s last great gamble of World War Two. The ambitious plan was for the German Army to drive through to Antwerp, thereby splitting US and British forces and seizing the initiative in the west. The attack came as a nasty shock to Eisenhower and only the bravery of the American defenders and speedy reinforcement by 200,000 troops prevented its success. Gradually, however, the attacker’s were driven back and eventually the increasingly unstable Hitler ordered a withdrawal from the ‘bulge’.
The Battle of the Bulge was the largest land battle fought by US forces during the war – losses were put at more than 75,000 men. The failure of the Ardennes Offensive sealed Nazi Germany’s fate.
