DIY Reverse Osmosis system - Aquarium water at home

We look at the basics of a DIY reverse osmosis kit. It's very important to maintain chlorine removal, as chlorine will destroy your RO membrane.

I've got a few amazon lists ranging from the absolute simplest to a setup like mine. The simple setup is cheaper up front, but will cost significantly more over the life of the setup.

Simplest setup - $40 + membrane and tubing
chlorine filter replacement every 350 gallons and RO will probably fail every 1000 gallons
Monthly upkeep cost per 300 gallons - $15.77
Average per gallon cost at 300g/month including initial cost - $0.07

Basic Setup - two canisters + RO filter - $88 + membrane and tubing
chlorine filter replacement every 4,500 gallons, particle filter change every 15,000 gallons, RO failure every 7000 gallons

Average per gallon cost at 300g/month including initial cost - $0.02

I do 4500 gallons a month, roughly, and at that scale the DIY kit costs me $20 per month, while the ebay kits would run me about $50/month and the simplest kit would run about $240/month.
