As Neil deGrasse Tyson says, how do you measure the height of a mountain. One approach is metres above sea level, the normal measurement with Mount Everest the highest. But what if you measure from the centre of the earth?

Then because of the equatorial bulge, Chimborazo is the highest mountain in the world at 6,384.4 km, with Mount Everest a distant tenth at 6,382.3 km. The other observation with no disagreement is that the Chimborazo summit is the point on earth closest to the sun!

0:00 We drove towards Chimborazo in the mid-morning
0:26 We checked our permit at the Reserva de
Producción de Fauna Chimborazo entrance
And then drove into the Reserva with Chimborazo always visible
We arrived at the Carrel Hut 4840m
0:47 We started the hike to high camp at 11:40am
The trail heads up the rocky slope
0:59 Zigzagging as it got steeper
1:20 The trail reaches the snowy ridge at 5140m at 12:35pm
The snowy trail is still easy in hiking boots
1:33 We arrived at high camp 5320 m at 13:55 after hiking 3.2 km in 2:15 with 580 m elevation gain
1:45 High camp has a few large done tents with mattresses for sleeping
And another large dome tent for cooking and eating
2:01 The weather cleared on Chimborazo before sunset
2:13 Chimborazo glowed yellow orange at sunset, but we didn’t see it because we were trying to sleep
2:36 After waking up at 22:00 to clear windless weather, we got ready and had a light breakfast
2:55 Guide Robbie Solari started our climb at 23:10
3:06 The first part of the route is below a wide large rock wall
3:17 Then the trail reaches snow but . . .
After 100 minutes, the last obstacle to the glacier is a 3m rock barrier at 5560m that has to be scrambled
3:37 Couldn’t film very much in the dark, just followed my guide’s footsteps on the relentlessly steep route
I took a refreshment break at 4:50am on a slightly less steep section of the route
3:48 Admiring the few village lights below
The route became the steepest at about 40 degrees
4:11 Guide Robbie leads the last few metres to Ventimilla summit
4:22 At dawn we reached the lower Ventimilla summit 6180m at 05:40 after climbing for 6:30
We could see our target, the main Whymper summit silhouetted by the ever brighter light
4:36 The dawn light quickly started getting brighter
Guide Robbie led the way up towards the highest summit
4:50 We stopped to admire Cotopaxi with a massive plume of smoke and ash in the bright orange light of dawn
Robbie continues leading the climb
5:08 The sun greets us as we make our last steps to the Whymper summit
5:20 We reached the main summit of Chimborazo 6264 m at 06:30 after climbing 2.1 km in 7:20 with 970 m elevation gain
5:54 The panoramic view from the main summit of Chimborazo
Guide Robbie Solari, Dangles and me on the Chimborazo summit
