In Chinese pronunciation system, there are three key elements: consonants, vowels and tones. Today we going to talk about tones.

There are four main tones in Chinese pronunciation system. Even with same consonants and vowels, words can have totally different meanings when pronounce different tones.

The first tone is high level pitch, --flat and high pitched. Raise you voice and make the sound. --It is important to keep your voice even across the whole syllable--.

Second tone from middle pitch to high pitch. Easy way to think of this tone, it’s just like when you ask a question in English. What? Really? The tone going up.

Third tone fall and rise. Don’t go up too much. When you look at the graph, this tone doesn’t go up to the high pitch. When you practice, you can low you chin down then bring it back up.

The fourth tone starts from high pitch but drops sharply to the bottom. English-speakers often associate this tone with an angry command.

The neutral tone is not mapped on the tone chart because it differs from the other four tones in that it does not have a defined pitch contour. The neutral tone is pronounced quickly and lightly without regard to pitch. Syllables with a neutral tone have no tone mark. This tone is usually very easy to pick up.

Now let talk about some basic tone changes. it may be a bit confusing at the beginning, but after you get used to it, you will find it’s very logical. The tone changes for a reason.

The first Rule:
When two third tones in a row, the first one becomes second tone. For example ni hao, they both third tones. If you say ni hao, it’s hard to say fast.
This rule is always followed, even though it may not be reflected in the pinyin.

Tone Rule #2: 不
When the word 不 (bù) precedes a fourth tone, 不 changes to second tone (bú). This rule is always followed, automatically, even though it will not be reflected in the pinyin.
Tone Rule #3: 一
When the character 一 (yī) precedes a fourth tone, 一 (yī) changes to second tone. For example yi ge, yi ban
When the character 一 (yī) precedes first, second or third tone, 一 (yī) changes to fourth tone. For example yi mao, yi bai.
