STORYLINE:
LEADIN:

Tennis fashion is big business, with sports brands vying to sign up the top players to wear their clothes.

But decades ago, another designer had more eccentric ideas of what should be seen on Centre Court.

STORYLINE:

US tennis player Maureen Connolly looks through a whole trunk full of outfits with her coach, Eleanor "Teach" Tennant.

In 1951, she had won the US Open at the tender age of 16, the youngest woman to do so.

A year later, Connolly was gearing up for Wimbledon, one of the most prestigious championships in the tennis calendar.

And designer Teddy Tinling wooed her with his creations.

From racquet motifs, to pleated skirts, the outfits were all in the famous Wimbledon white dress code.

There was even a sketch for a ballgown Connolly could wear to the winners' ball.

The young player did go on win the Wimbledon title that year. Connolly secured nine major singles titles during her career.

In the 1960s, the players had changed, but Tinling was still designing for Wimbledon.

As well and the familiar white dresses, he even suggested a very glamorous faux fur coat for players coming off court.

A more wacky idea was a paper dress.

It was water resistant - perhaps necessary for the English climate.

And it would be written on too.
