VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:
IN THE FLORIDA KEYS, BRIDGES SEEM TO FLOAT OVER CLEAR BLUE WATERS. THE DRIVE THROUGH THIS ISLAND CHAIN OFFERS PICTURESQUE VIEWS FROM EVERY ANGLE. BUT THIS TOP FISHING DESTINATION FACES A HARSH REALITY: MENACING ANIMALS ARE HAVING A MAJOR IMPACT ON NATIVE WILDLIFE HERE.
SOUNDBITE (English): Matt Steinmacher, Local Resident:
"They get all over the windshield at night. And I got to wash the windshield every morning before I leave."
LOCAL RESIDENT MATT STEINMACHER IS TALKING ABOUT FERAL AND FREE-RANGING CATS. WILDLIFE OFFICIALS SAY THOSE CATS KILL SEVERAL MILLION WILD ANIMALS IN FLORIDA EACH YEAR. TO FIGHT THE PROBLEM, THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE HAS A PLAN TO TRAP FERAL CATS AND OTHER EXOTIC PREDATORS THAT POSE A SERIOUS THREAT TO IMPERILED WILDLIFE IN THE FLORIDA KEYS.
SOUNDBITE (English): Matt Steinmacher, no super
"I think it's a good idea and I think it will work. It's something…you gotta try something. YOu can't just leave them alone."
THE NEWS OF THE TRAPS COMES ON THE HEELS OF THE PYTHON CHALLENGE, WHERE HUNTERS STALKED THE ELUSIVE BURMESE PYTHON THROUGH THE FLORIDA EVERGLADES.
SOUNDBITE (English): Phillip Hughes
"Pythons eats cats. Recently, coyotes showed up. Those eat cats. Pythons could eat coyotes. And this problem is getting more tangled…the web is getting more tangled. But it's not the natural food web that we inherited."
PHILLIP HUGHES IS AN ECOLOGIST WITH THE FEDERAL WILDLIFE AGENCY. HE SAYS PREDATION BY CATS IS THE HIGHEST SOURCE OF MORTALITY FOR \TWO ENDANGERED SPECIES, INCLUDING THE LOWER KEYS MARSH RABBIT.
IN SOUTH FLORIDA, THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION HAS SPECIALIZED TEAMS THAT TRAP BLACK AND WHITE TEGUS LIKE THIS ONE.
