A government spokesman said a car bomb detonated in the afternoon of May 8, 2021, as schoolgirls were leaving class and that two more bombs exploded afterwards as more pupils rushed out. The attack took place in a Hazara neighbourhood of Kabul called Dasht-e-Barchi. A predominantly Shia Muslim ethinic minority group, the Hazaras have long been persecuted by Sunni hardliners such as Islamic State militants and the Taliban. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has blamed Taliban insurgents, but a spokesman for the Taliban denied involvement.
