You are witnessing (and hearing) the sound of a Gretsch Broadkaster Shell Pack.  This single-owner shell pack is finished in Satin Walnut with Chrome Hardware.  The sizes of these drums are:

22in X 14in Kick Drum – Model Number: GK-1422B – Serial Number: 04776
12in X 8in Rack Tom – Model Number:  GK-0812T – Serial Number: 04777
16in X 16in Floor Tom – Model Number: GK-1616F – Serial Number:  04778

These amazing 3-ply Maple/Poplar/Maple Shells are made in Gretsch’s Ridgeland, South Carolina, USA Factory and are a bit thinner allowing for more body and bottom end than regular Gretsch USA Made Shells.  Combined with 302 Dual-Flanged Hoops, you have toms that sing with presence and a touch of attack not achieved with triple-flanged hoops.

For this video, we doctored up the kick drum a bit and added a shop-made “tone ring” to the Remo Ambassador Reso Kick Drumhead to round out the tone of the drum.  The client fitted an Evans EMad Clear Batter Head with the 1.5in damping ring to allow the kick drum to sing with presence, tone and body WITHOUT the need of a pillow or other damping materials.

Here’s the information from the Gretsch Website
From the 1920s through the 1950s, the Gretsch flagship drum set was the legendary Broadkaster Series. It featured a thin, three-ply shell and produced what was to be, “That Great Gretsch Sound.” Today, in the Gretsch Drum Factory in Ridgeland, South Carolina, USA, with the help of advanced drum-making techniques, the Broadkaster has returned, bringing with it all of sonic brilliance of its namesake.

Broadkaster shells are made with a North American maple/poplar/maple formula. Each shell includes an interior-ply scarf joint that supplies added structural integrity to thin, musical shells. Like all USA-made Gretsch drums, shell interiors are finished with classic Gretsch Silver Sealer. The shell is hand finished with the exclusive reverse roundover bearing edge, which allows greater surface contact between the bearing edge and drumhead. The result is tone that is incredibly deep and warm.

Broadkaster toms and snare drums are outfitted with Gretsch’s “302” 3.0mm, double flanged steel hoops. These hoops are similar to “Stick Chopper” hoops used in the 1950’s but are constructed from a heavier gauge steel to stand up to today’s more assertive playing styles. The 302 hoop helps create a more open tone than a die-cast hoop and adds ambient overtones to the overall tonal characteristic.

Like its legendary predecessors from the 1950s, today’s Broadkaster faithfully produces warm, dense and punchy tones. Thanks to the modern manufacturing advances and finishing technology, today’s Broadkaster has even greater dynamic response and sonic presence than the originals.

SPECIAL THANKS to Kyle Broadbooks of Verdigris High School for demo'ing this wonderful shell pack.  Kyle is a three-year Jazz Band All State Musician while playing drums for the Verdigris High School Jazz and Pep Band.  I use the term musician as Kyle is a multi-instrumentalist currently playing guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele, piano and has most recently begun singing.  I am looking forward to seeing what this young man is going to do with his future.  Good Luck Kyle.
