🏡 The Container House, completed in 2017 in West Vancouver, Canada, was commissioned for a couple with three grown children.
🌲 The house was designed for a compact and simplified living arrangement, considering the clients' request for ease of living and an eye towards retirement.
🏞️ Situated on a steep mountain-side property, the design takes advantage of the slope to create a bright and open house perched high above the ground.
📐 Despite planning guidelines allowing for a larger three-floor house, the decision was made for a two-storey structure, maximizing interior volumes and architectural possibilities.
🛌 Essential living spaces, including the master bedroom, are located on the upper floor, minimizing vertical travel within the house.
🌅 The upper floor features an L-shaped structure with a cantilevered master bedroom wing, providing privacy and solar protection for the swimming pool below.
🪟 Due to the site's limited width, rooms are stacked behind one another, and the living room is positioned slightly above the dining room to offer extended views.
🚗 Placing the garage at a split level between floors reduces distances from the car to the living spaces.
🏞️ The house design includes a large covered deck that significantly extends the living area when weather permits, offering views of mountains and north light.
🌐 The architectural firm behind the project is Mcleod Bovell Modern Houses, and materials used include glass, steel, and concrete.
