Learn how to install a new string on your violin, viola, or cello. Please remember to always go slowly and make sure that the string is wound neatly on the peg.

Here is a written explanation of how to do it:

1. Remove the old string. Change only one string at a time, and be sure to loosen (not tighten) the string you want to remove. If a string is broken at the peg, you may need to loosen the other strings slightly to get at the bit that's still in the pegbox.

1a. If the string is too long for the instrument (i.e. a full size string on a 3/4 size instrument), you can clip it with a pair of wire cutters. Try securing the string at the tailpiece and holding it loosely over the pegbox - clip off anything that passes the end of the scroll. Be careful not to cut it too short!

2. To install the new string, feed the peg end through the peghole so that it sticks out by 5-10mm. If you have multiple pegholes, select the one closest to the middle when the peg is in place. With the string inserted, rotate the peg towards the scroll so that the remaining length of the string comes over the top (not underneath).

2a. Making an "X" on the peg with the string helps to keep it from slipping under tension. (JSI recommends this procedure, although there are differing opinions in the string world as to whether it's necessary or not - you be the judge!) First, rotate the peg and guide the length of the string so it passes between the end of the string and the side of the pegbox closest to the peghead (this means the "D" and "G" strings will go the the left and the "A" and "E" strings will go to the right as you look at the pegbox).

Next, rotate the peg again, but move the length of the string to the opposite side of the string end. After you've passed the peg hole and string end, cross the length of the string back over the first winding to create an "X".

Finally, wind the string a third time, staying on the peghead side of the string end.

2b. Continue winding the string until the colored wrapping passes the nut, making sure that the string sits neatly on the peg and does not cross over itself. Holding the string somewhat tightly so that the windings don't come loose, secure the other end of the string to the tailpiece.

Keeping up the slight tension, make sure the string is sitting properly in the corresponding slots in the bridge and nut. It is very important not to apply full tension to the string if it is improperly seated, as this can potentially damage your bridge.

Tune up the new string, applying inward pressure on the peg to keep it from being pulled by the string tension. Remember that a new string will take some time to stretch out and break in, so you may have to tune it repeatedly before it's ready.\

You're done! Enjoy your new string!
