Most people when asked to get an endoscopy done panic because they think, it is a painful procedure. Dr Maran rest assures that it is not so and it is a procedure that takes 2-5 minutes time. Generally, there is no need for anesthesia to perform an endoscopy. Only in certain cases like children or old people, anesthesia or sedation is recommended before endoscopy. This may be necessary because certain procedures along with diagnosis might be carried out like foreign body removal, etc. It is an outpatient procedure and after that, you can carry on with your normal routine. It is a slim tube (not a real thick one as many think) that easily enters your mouth. Overnight fasting for 8-10 hours is recommended before getting an endoscopy done. Regarding taking your regular BP, cardiac, or diabetes medicines before the endoscopy, Dr Maran asks to follow the protocol as laid by the physician. So to have an easy endoscopy procedure, always breathe through the nose and not through the mouth, and think of swallowing water and push the endoscopy tube.
