Without narration or people, DESERT DREAMS lets viewers experience the Sonoran Desert from the inside out. This immersive 52-minute production focuses on beauty and biodiversity followed through a cycle of five seasons: Dry Summer, Wet Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring. Long-time resident of Tucson, Arizona, Producer-Director-Cinematographer Thomas Wiewandt blends HD video and time-lapse imagery captured over the past 4 years with stills compiled over 3 decades. And the supporting sound track combines natural sounds with a kaleidoscope of flute and percussion vignettes by Gary Stroutsos. After a full year of editing, DESERT DREAMS has brought 182 species of plants and animals to life. For a downloadable list of all 182 species (with their names in English, Spanish, and Latin) and a list of the 29 musical instruments heard in this film, visit DesertDreams.ORG. Completed in September 2012, DESERT DREAMS has already won the Directors' Choice Award for Best Short Documentary at the 2013 Sedona International Film Festival and was among the winners at the 2013 Wild & Scenic Film Festival. It will be showcased in June at the Maui Film Festival and at the Reel Earth Environmental Film Festival in New Zealand, the leading environmental film festival in the Southern Hemisphere, and in September at the 2013 Wildlife Conservation Film Festival in New York City and at the 2013 Green Screen Environmental Film Festival in Germany, where it has been nominated for two awards. Its big-screen debut in Tucson on May 19 at the historic Fox Theatre was a sell-out success, with 1164 seats filled and 200+ walk-ups turned away at the door.
