Marsh warblers (Acrocephalus palustris) don't just imitate European birds from their native habitat in the breeding season. They also remember the call and song of African birds they know from their winter residence in South-East-Africa. Several dozen imitations of African bird species in marsh warblers have already been identified by researchers. So all these efforts to increase chances with the opposite sex. You hear one of the finest examples of sexual selection in songbirds among marsh warblers. Apparently you can also show fitness with a good memory.

Bosrietzangers imiteren niet alleen Europese vogels uit hun eigen habitat in het broedseizoen. Ze onthouden ook de roep en zang van Afrikaanse vogels die ze kennen van hun winterverblijf in Zuid-Oost-Afrika. Enkele dozijnen imitaties van Afrikaanse vogelsoorten bij bosrietzangers zijn al vastgesteld door onderzoekers. Al deze inspanningen dus om de kansen bij het andere geslacht te vergroten. Je hoort bij bosrietzangers een van de fraaiste voorbeelden van seksuele selectie bij zangvogels. Ook met een goed geheugen kun blijkbaar je fitheid tonen.
