The horse fly is a large fly that will invade residential and countryside areas, but are most commonly found in rural properties. They look similar to house flies, but are much bigger and aggressive. They will bite with blade-like mouth parts that can tear into flesh.
The horse fly is large, typically around an inch and a quarter in length. They can range in color from brown, gray, and black. They will have large heads with big green-ish eyes.
They are attracted to manure, water, and cattle. So they can commonly be found around barns, stables, pastures, physically on livestock, ponds, compost piles, or even near pools.
To get control, first remove conducive sites. Do your best to manage manure, remove any standing water, and regularly clean troughs.
Next, use Fly Relief fly traps to reduce the horse fly population. This is a disposable, insecticide-free trap for outdoor use.
To activate the trap, remove the plastic seal at the top, and pull up on the tab until it snaps in place. The fly attractant is inside in a dissolvable bag. Simply add water to the fill line, and then hang where you see horse fly activity. Flies will be lured by the attractant, and then trapped inside the bag unable to fly back out and drown.
If you have horses, you can use Pyranha Equine Spray and Wipe to kill and repel horse flies. This spray is safe to use on horses and provides excellent coverage for flies. This is ONLY labelled to use on horses -- do not apply this on other livestock or pets.
For total broad spectrum control, use Flex 10-10 insecticide. This is a liquid concentrate that can be mixed with water in a pump sprayer and is specially designed to be used in misting and fogging systems. Flex 10-10 offers a quick knockdown and a long lasting residual for fly control. This is also great to use for mosquitoes, bed bugs inside, and many other pests. Follow label instructions for proper mix and usage rates. Mist Flex 10-10 through a mister or fogging machine to eliminate any fly activity. You can also spray Flex 10-10 around windows, doors, and along surfaces.
You can even use this with an insect growth regulator, like Pivot IGR. Simply mix the two chemicals in the tank with the Flex 10-10. This will target fly eggs and prevent them from hatching for continued control.
Finally, control and prevent horse flies on your property by using Maxforce granular fly bait. This is a granular bait that can be spread around the property, used in fly bait stations, or painted onto surfaces. This can be dissolved in water to make a thin paste. Use a brush and simply apply this to surfaces where horse fly activity is common, so that they will be lured and killed by the bait.
